Meet DownStreet Artist Gwendolyn Bird! Gwendolyn, a high school biology and environmental science teacher, creates beautiful images by cutting and layering card stock paper.

In almost all of her pieces she creates these images by removing substance, cutting away layers to reveal the colors underneath. The pieces are composed of one to ten layers, and every part of each layer is connected, if tenuously, creating the challenge of designing the piece so it won’t fall apart. Sometimes this is accomplished by making the pieces like stencils, with the bottom layer becoming the shape and the top layer working as the background. Other times, shapes are layered on each other.

Her works often depict birds, squids, or complex geometric designs. But don’t take our word for it, stop by MountainOne Bank on Main Street from July 28-August 24 to check them out yourself!
